It’s about a guy who wants his best friend to date, and presumably sleep with, his girlfriend. ![]() It’s about a man who meets up with his wife’s secret lover after she dies. The first story is called “ DRIVE MY CAR” and it’s pretty normal, at least for Murakami. I definitely give Men Without Women five stars.īut the further you get into the book, the weirder it gets. I got a big kick out of Men Without Women. And the male characters seem to very submissively accept it and try to move on with their lives but still always preoccupied by the sense that they’ve been cheated on. The strange thing about the stories in this book is that in pretty much every story, the woman’s absence is actually caused by her infidelity. It’s a collection of seven short stories all tied together by the theme of men… without women… As you can probably tell from the title. I’ve just finished reading Men Without Women by Haruki Murakami. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Kong and Jaws books have one lost film in common in the form of King Kong vs. Most of the chapters were Appendix entries for The Lost Films that just got too big and detailed so I decided it would be better to make that its own book. Was there difficulty in avoiding repetition? Writing Japanese Monsters, as well as your Kong and Jaws books, cover similar topics and ground, yet they don’t “echo” each other. I had forgotten that some people drew parallels between the ‘14 Godzilla and Redmoon! I have a hunch that one’s just coincidence, but you never know. ![]() How many “connections” between existing films and unmade projects do you tend to notice? People have pointed out how Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla (2014) compares to Godzilla vs. Plus lots of other people have already written on it. I definitely prefer to write on the ones without as much information out there, so yeah, writing about something like the DeBont Godzilla is a little less fun because it could be a book unto itself. I can say one positive thing about my experience reading the book: It left me using sword battle as an analogy for human relations and that might be useful somehow. The edition I read presents the book as "the cornerstone of Japanese Culture" and I have absolutely no idea how this book played any significant role in Japanese culture it baffles me. I have a suspicion that all those people who rated this book highly have filled in the gap with their imagination. Furthermore, the topics are elaborated on very little in this book. The book is full of lines such as "research this well," "study this thoroughly," "I cannot elaborate on this in writing" and I'm not sure how these are supposed to evoke any insight in me into anything. I guess I'm supposed to reflect on it and come back to it until I "get it" if there's any wisdom in here. I'm definitely missing something, either due to the translation or my inability to read between the lines. ![]() This book puzzled me in that at first glance I seem to have learned nothing else from it than how to hold a sword and attack and enemy, and obvious things like never let your enemy have a chance to recover.
